Burdette A. Bacon, Major, USAF (Retired)
February 27, 1932 – September 24, 1993

Former Alaska resident Burdette Aldrich Bacon Jr., 61, died Sept. 24 at his home in Gastonia, N.C.

Services were held at Carothers Funeral Home in Gastonia, N.C., with burial in Gaston Memorial Park.

Mr. Bacon was born in Ponca City, Okla., the son of the late Elvie and Burdette Swelling Bacon Sr.

He was a retired U.S. Air Force major after 20 years as a flight instructor for various types of helicopters. He was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base for 10 years. Mr. Bacon was a Vietnam War veteran with various campaign citations. He was also a Scout Master with various Scout troops while in the Air Force and while a civilian and devoted much time to single-parent children. He also owned Bacon Refreshment Service.

Mr. Bacon was a member of New Covenant Church of Gastonia and was also a former deacon, elder and church administrator at various churches.

He is survived by a son, Hua Ba Bacon of Anchorage; three daughters, Terri Johnson of Jemison, Ala., Wendelin Hyde of Wetunpak, Ala., and Tanya Sumerel of Huntersville, N.C.; former wife, Verna Lynndelle Roberts; a sister, Edna Joyce Hill of Ponca City; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a brother, Martin.
