Guy K Barrett, Lt. Colonel, USAF (Retired)

Lt. Col Guy K. Barrett (Ret) passed away peacefully on June 21, 2022, at Cape Canaveral Hospital in Cocoa Beach, Florida. Guy was born August 2, 1949, in Ida Grove, Iowa. He graduated from Ida Grove High School (1967) and Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa (1971) with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science.
With a love for his country, he then joined the United States Air Force on November 5, 1971 and completed Military Pilot Training in December 1972. Guy was a decorated Command Pilot totaling over 4000 flying hours on multiple aircrafts including CH-53C, CH/HH-3, T-37, T-38, T-33, F-106, F-15 (Eagle). The Eagle was his dream fighter jet. His key assignments were 56th SOW/21st SOS, NKP RTAFB, Thailand; 5th Fighter Interceptor SQ., Minot, North Dakota; 1st Tac Fighter Wing/71st TFS, Langley AFB, Virginia; Fighter Operations Division/Executive Officer to the Commander, HQ 13th Air Force, Clark AFB, Republic of the Philippines, 13AF; HQ PACAF Chief of International Affairs Division/Chief of Program Division, Hickam AFB, Hawaii.
He retired from the United States Air Force on August 31, 1993. His awards and decorations include Meritorious Service Medal (2 OLC), AF Commendation Medal AFCM (1 OLC), AF Organizational Excellence Award, AF Outstanding Unit Award (5 OLC), Air Defense Expeditionary Medal, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon in addition to several other distinguished awards.
After his career in the United States Air Force, he moved back to his hometown and started a new career as Director of Human Resources for GOMACO Corporation in Ida Grove Iowa.
He was a member of the Order of Daedalians, American Legion, VFW, Air Force Association, Advent Lutheran Church in Melbourne, FL and Suntree Country Club in Melbourne, FL.
Guy was an avid golfer all his life who took every opportunity to play on incredible courses all over the world. The love of fishing began at a young age and carried on throughout. Taking the boat out on the local lakes, to Canada or for the annual summer trips to Minnesota were always the best adventures. He loved all sports, but his favorite teams were the Iowa State Cyclones, Drake University Bulldogs and the New York Yankees.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years Judy (Lund) Barrett of Tioga, North Dakota; his beloved Border Collie pup Izzy; daughter Kristi Altringer Novin and granddaughter Ainsley Novin of Oxford, Connecticut; sisters Sonna (Peter) Neumeister of Carver, Minnesota and Sheila (Doug) Soellner of Holstein, Iowa; brother Kirk “Bones” Barrett of Ida Grove, Iowa. He loved all of his nieces and nephews including their littles. He is proceeded in death by his father Donald “Bosco” Barrett and mother Frances “Sadie” (Hargens) Barrett.
A Memorial Celebration will be held at Advent Lutheran Church (Melbourne, FL) on July 1st at 11am.
