Sharon Springs – Tony Desmond, a resident of Sharon Springs since 1974 and previously of Cherry Valley, died on Wednesday, October 23rd, at Palatine Nursing Center. He was 81.
Born in Amsterdam on October 10, 1943, he was the son of the late Anthony J. and Eugenia (Dygert) Desmond.

Tony was a 1961 graduate of Canajoharie Central School, and he immediately entered the Air Force. Tony was part of the civil engineering squadron at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida.
After retiring from active duty, Tony began working for the New York State Police as a trooper out of the former Warnerville barracks. He would work in many locations throughout his twenty-eight years with the state police, eventually retiring as sergeant about 1999. Tony campaigned for Schoharie County Sheriff a few years into retirement and served two four-year terms as county sheriff. Also, he served as town of Sharon supervisor and was serving as town of Sharon justice at the time of his passing.

He was a longtime communicant of the former St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Sharon Springs. His memberships included the American Legion Post 1269, the Sharon Springs Volunteer Fire Department, and the Sharon Springs Volunteer Rescue Squad. Recently, he became a member of the Marshville Evangelical Church in Canajoharie, across the street from where he grew up.

Survivors include his wife of fifty-five years (January 18, 1969), Patricia (Patti) Desmond; two sons, Michael Desmond of Norfolk, VA and Shawn Desmond of South Deerfield, MA; a sister, Rosalyn Martin of Canajoharie; and five grandchildren, Patrick, Kerry, Emma, Benjamin, and Aaron. He was predeceased by a sister in 2018, Cynthia A. DeSorrento.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, October 29, at St. Vincent de Paul’s Church in Cobleskill. Repast will follow the service at the Fancy Farmer Restaurant, Sharon Springs. A private burial will be held at a later date in Cherry Valley Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Legion Post 1269, POB 273, Sharon Springs, or to the Sharon Springs Volunteer Fire Department, POB 336, Sharon Springs, NY 13459.
