James A. Hartwig, Major, USAF (Retired)

Maj US Air Force Vietnam James A. Hartwig, 67, of Old County Road 553, Sands, Michigan, died at Marquette General Hospital. Jim was born April 7, 1936 in Hutchinson, Minnesota, a son of Arthur R. and Alice L. (Hauge) Hartwig. On May 19, 1960, he married the former Eulaine E. Hozdulick in Anchorage, Alaska and she survived him.

Jim served as an officer in the Air Force for many years before his retirement in 1977 as the commander of air rescue. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his service in Vietnam.

He was then employed with M & B Auto Parts before becoming co-owner of Automotive High Tech. He was a member of the VFW and in his spare time enjoyed fishing and traveling. Jim was also an active member of the Sands Township Zoning Board.

Jim was survived by his wife of 43 years, Eulaine Hartwig of Gwinn; mother, Alice Hartwig of Hutchinson, MN; children, James (Vicki) Hartwig, Jr. of Arnold, Missouri, Jody (Jeff) Harry of Washington, DC, Sharon (Timothy) Johnson of Gwinn, Laurie (Calvin) Noel of Dubuque, IA and Kathleen Hartwig of Seattle, WA; five grandchildren; and siblings, Barb Linkert of Applevalley, MN, Donald (Marilyn) Hartwig of Hutchinson, MN, Becky (Paul) Krueger of Rochester, MN and Bruce (Patricia) Hartwig of Hutchinson, MN.

Burial information: Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Preston, MN

Captain Hartwig served a tour in the Vietnam War as a HH-3E pilot with the 37th ARRS in the 1966-1967-time frame.
