Private family services for Leroy Hensley, 84, of Sallisaw, will be at a later date. Cremation is under the direction of Agent Mallory Martin Funeral Service in Sallisaw.

Leroy was born on Sept. 1, 1938, to Acie William Hensley and Lou Anna (Steeley) Hensley in Badger Lee.

He attended school in Sallisaw and graduated in 1956. Leroy entered the U.S. Air Force where he served for five years and attended the first helicopter mechanic training at Stead Air Base in Reno, Nev. He married Janie Wheeler on July 15, 1957, in Stilwell. After his time at Stead Air Base, Leroy and Janie returned to Sallisaw where they made their home and added to their family. He worked for the Oklahoma Highway Department for 33 years, retiring in 1996.

Survivors are his wife, Janie Hensley of the home; two daughters, Carla Jackson and Ronny of Ada and Cathy Jane Hensley of Sallisaw; one son, Chris Hensley and Elaine of Sallisaw; four grandchildren, Jennifer James and Zayne of Ada, Jeff Jackson and Paola of London, Liz Bennett and Fletcher of Oklahoma City and Allison Phillips and Tim of Sallisaw; five great-grandchildren, Evelyn and Aubrey James, Oliver, Palmer and Theo Bennett; his beagle, Trey and his cat, Tom; and several other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Wanda and one brother, Buel.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a humane society or charity of your choice in Leroy’s name.
