John Henry McAfee

John Henry McAfee, Lt. Colonel, USAF (Retired)

December 18, 1947 – August 17, 2022

John Henry McAfee left this world on August 17, 2022, in Venice, Florida and journeyed to Jesus Christ’s embrace after 74 years. John grew up in Valparaiso, Indiana, graduated from Purdue University, then was drafted and served as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force. During his military years, John trained pilots, conducted special operation missions, and was instrumental in the development of night vision operations which helped our military pilots “own the night.”

After retiring from the military, John became an entrepreneur and used his creativity, wisdom, and integrity in private enterprise. He was a natural leader and an inspiration to many, while always putting his family, marriage and fatherhood first. To hear John tell it, his greatest legacy was his family.

John will be remembered for his courage, strength, wisdom, optimism, generosity, perseverance, and love. He was a shining example of these qualities after he was injured in a plane crash which placed him on a path of continuous struggle as a paraplegic. Defying the odds, John lived another 23 years with his loving wife, spending that time traveling the world and visiting family. To his last day, John cared for others and provided a wealth of wisdom, encouragement, and love.

God could not have provided a better man as a husband, father, brother, and friend than John Henry McAfee. Those that knew him are proud to carry his legacy forward.

He was preceded by his parents John T. McAfee and Isolde (Boening) and sisters Christine, Patricia, and Nancy. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 52 years, Janet Svendsen McAfee. He is survived by brother Lawrence McAfee and sister Marguerite McAfee. He is also survived by his children Christine McAfee Vervisch (Scott), Rebecca McAfee Morris (Kevin), and John Severin McAfee (Athena) plus nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sunshine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand. – An Irish blessing
