Pedro Mejia, MSgt., USAF (Retired)

April 04, 1939 – March 02, 2023

Pedro Mejia, Master Sergeant (Ret.), died peacefully on March 2nd, 2023, in Austin, Texas. Born April 4, 1939, in Mercedes, Texas, Pedro lived a full life of 83 years.

He joined the military at age 21, and valiantly served his country as a helicopter technician and an aircraft ground equipment RPR during the Vietnam War and other conflicts. He was especially proud of his service with the Jolly Green Giants squad completing search and rescue missions. “The Jolly Green pilots and crew members set the standard for professionalism, bravery, persistence, resilience and dedication to duty,” said C. William “Bill” Hoilman ’64, Jolly Green pilot.

During his military career, he also welcomed five daughters with his first wife, Maria (Cavazos). After twenty years of military service, Pedro was honorably discharged and thanked for his service. Not ready to slow down, he continued being active and earned an HVAC certification and worked until retirement.

His favorite pastime was working outdoors on his home in South Austin. With his wife, Guadalupe, they built a haven for all they knew and loved.

Anyone who met Pedro knew he valued his freedom and his country. Many around him will fondly recall him saying, “God loves you and so do I.”

He is preceded in death by his oldest daughter, Belinda, his first wife, Maria, and his second wife, Elva (Guzman), his parents, his sisters Isabel and Molly, and his brothers Jose and Gene.

Pedro will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Guadalupe, his daughters Cynthia, June, Sonia, and Robina, his stepchildren Ralph, Maria, Andrew, Gabriel, and Carlos, his siblings Mimi and Lupita, his 22 grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
