July 5, 1956 at Parks AFB, CA. I entered the USAF Basic training.
August 11, 1956 at Sheppard AFB, TX. for rotary wing 43130 training.
February 16, 1956 at Itomi AFB, Japan with the 24th Helicopter Squadron under Major Francis Carney.
April 25, 1957 transferred to Det. 3.
November 21, 1957 at Eniwetok with Det. 4 at Eniwetok for Operation Hardtack, Atomic & Hydrogen Bomb test.
July 9, 1958 at Keesler AFB, MS. in a small rescue unit.
Some of the personnel there I have kept in contact with over the years, Sgt. Allen H Dyer, Sgt. Benny D Negrette, Sgt. David M Evers, A1C Franklin Bothwick, A/1C Elmer Anwieler, Sgt. Richard Tomlinson, A2C Ron Green, also our safety man Sgt. Blaylock. I have kept in contact with most of them except I haven’t heard from Dick Tomlinson since the hurricane went through Biloxi MS., We were all assigned to 3380th Field Maintenance.
October 1961 at Stead AFB, NV. where we all got shipped and assigned with the 3635th Flight Training.
January 10, 1963 at Saigon, RVN with the 3751st Field Training. (o/l FTD 917th).
September 1963 returned to Stead AFB, NV.
20th February 1964 discharged.
Worked on H-21B’s in Japan, H-19 & H-21B’s at Eniwetok, H-21A’s & B’s at Keesler. Worked on H-21B’s & Kaman H-43’s at Stead AFB, NV. and the tire Shop. Worked on H-19B’s in Viet Nam.
I retired after 35 years at GM.
I belong to the National Association of Atomic Veterans (NAAV).

Charles D. Nachbar, USAF
June 12, 1939 – October 02, 2019
NACHBAR, Charles D. – of Clio, age 80 died Wednesday, October 2, 2019, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 12:00 PM Monday, October 7, 2019, at O’Guinn Family Funeral Home, Clio Chapel. Pastor Hal Phillips officiating. Burial at Great Lakes National Cemetery will follow on Tuesday October 8, 2019, 10:30AM. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Sunday, October 6, 2019, from 12-8pm.
Charles was born June 12, 1939, in Birch Run, to the late Mathias and Helen Nachbar. He grew up in the Clio area and attended Clio Public Schools. Charles served proudly in the US Air Force for 8 years, spending one year at Eniwetok during nuclear testing (earning the distinction of being an Atomic Veteran https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_veteran) and one year in Vietnam. On December 3, 1991, he married Sally Barnes (ne’e Dingman) in Toledo Ohio. Charles was employed at General Motors for 35 years, retiring in 2000. He was lifelong member of VFW Post # 3087 and American Legion Post #125 Birch Run. Charles enjoyed Motorcycling, fishing, traveling, old cars & motorcycles, attending Back to the Bricks car show in Flint and especially time with his great grandchildren and family.
Surviving are: Wife Sally; Children Charles W. Nachbar of Battle Creek, Darlene (Cipriano) Galindo of El Paso Tx., Dean (Kathy) Nachbar of Washington State, Bethany (Danny Beard) Nachbar of Mt. Morris, and Wyatt Barnes II of Clio. Grandchildren: Sarah Nachbar-Robinson (Crystal Robinson-Nachbar), Melissa (Trevor) Storms, Lucinda Hernandez, Jonathan Galindo, Garrett Nachbar, Hailey Casey, Austin Nachbar, Artyom and Artur Karapetov, Arya Lonsky.
