On September 27, 1968, a U.S. Air Force helicopter HH-43B Huskie, callsign Pedro, assigned to Detachment 13, 38th Aerospace Rescue and Recovery Squadron (38th ARRS) at Phu Cat Air Base, RVN, took off to recover the crew of a downed U.S. Army helicopter approximately 18 miles north of Phu Cat. At a height of 300 feet above the pickup point, the helicopter received ground fire and the pilot, MAJ David H Pittard, was hit in the chest. The aircraft headed to Qui Nhon where MAJ Pittard was pronounced dead on arrival. The helicopter returned safely to Phu Cat. [Taken from wikipedia.org and vhpa.org]
