June 9, 1965 – May 11, 2023

Scott Micheal Smeltzer, 57, of Devils Lake, ND and formerly of Leeds, ND passed away peacefully from brain cancer Thursday, May 11, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Society in Larimore, ND, with his mother, Sharon Smeltzer Darling, at his side.  Memorial Service will be at 2:00 PM Monday, June 5, 2023, at Leeds Lutheran Church with Pastor Sharon Baker officiating.  Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 PM followed by 7:00 PM Sharing of Memories, Sunday, June 4, 2023, at the Nelson Funeral Home in Leeds. Burial will be at Leeds Lutheran Cemetery.

Scott was the first-born son to Virgil and Sharon Smeltzer in Rugby, ND.  He grew up in Leeds, ND with younger brother Shane.  In high School, Scott excelled in his studies, sports and FFA. He achieved top honors in livestock judging.

Scott joined the United States Air Force at 18 years old and did tours in Asia and Florida. His job was on-board maintenance for helicopters.  The Air Force awarded Scott so many accolades that the wall where the awards hung was referred to as “The Scott Smeltzer” wall. His military service was a source of great pride. He loved adventure and saw the world while in the Air Force.

His working life was the airlines. First America West and then Southwest as a jet mechanic. Where he got his nickname “BIGDOG” and wore it proudly on his uniform. His skills as a mechanic earned him several “Top Wrench” awards while at Southwest.  Retiring at age 50, he returned to his North Dakota roots to hunt and fish with his sons.

Scott loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing since he was a child. But, as much as he loved it, he loved his sons more. Zachary and Jacob were his proudest achievement.

He is survived by sons, Zachary Virgil Smeltzer and Jacob Micheal Smeltzer; wife, Ila Smeltzer; mother, Sharon Smeltzer Darling.  He was preceded in death by his father, Virgil Smeltzrt and brother, Shane Smeltzer.
