UH-1N, S/N 69-6643

1996 – January 31; UH-1N #A Fairchild AFB UH-1N #69-6643 (Call sign “Save 43”) assigned to Det. 24, 41st ARRS crewed by Capt. Emerson L. Dyer (P), 1st Lt. Gerard G. Hicks (CP), SSgt. Jerry D. Barnes (FM) and SSgt. Steven A. Tyer (PJ), crashed early in the afternoon about 30 miles west of Las Vegas, NV.

They were participating in a week long search for two missing Air Force 0-2 Skymasters and a missing civilian light aircraft. They were searching in a box canyon when a strong wind downdraft forced them into the side of the canyon causing the crash.

The four crewmembers were listed in stable condition on Sunday with Capt. Dyer and SSgt. Barnes at Southern Nevada Memorial Hospital and 1st Lt. Hicks and SSgt. Tyer at the Nellis AFB Hospital. The aircraft was destroyed.
