George C. Martin, Major, USAF (Retired)
April 30, 1924 – October 21, 2016
Major (Ret.) George C. (Jolly Green) Martin was born April 30, 1924, in Chicago, Illinois to Ida and Harry P. Martin and passed away October 21, 2016. He was 92 years old.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Thursday, October 27, 2016 at Searcy Funeral Home and Crematory Chapel with Deacon Skip Lucas officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 1:00 P.M. and continuing until service time on Thursday.
He enlisted in the Army February, 1943 and attended flight school, graduating in April, 1945. He stayed in the Reserves until recalled for the Korean War in 1950 and stayed in the Air Force until retiring in 1967. His last assignment was as a “Jolly Green” pilot rescuing downed pilots in Vietnam.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Mary Martin Browning, and two sons, George C. Martin, Jr., and Patrick H. Martin, II and grandson, Ryan Nolan.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley Martin; daughters, Penelope Duerr, Oakdale, NY; Kathleen Nemish, Dothan, AL; Angela Martin, Dothan, AL; sons, Col. (Ret.) Edwin Martin (Shirley) Huntsville, AL; Lt. Col. (Ret.) Stuart Martin (Ret.) (Kristen) Tampa, FL; Daniel Martin (Patricia) Shalimar, FL; David Martin (Debra) Pace, FL; stepson, William Sampson (Teresa) Dothan, AL; stepdaughter, Debora Nobles, Columbia, KY; 13 grandchildren; 8 step grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and 8 step great-grandchildren.
