Unrath, Luke A.

Luke A. Unrath, Major, USAF (Fallen)
April 13, 1989 – November 29, 2023

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Maj. Luke Allen Unrath, who entered eternal rest on November 29, 2023, at the age of 34, in the tragic CV-22 Osprey crash off the coast of Yakushima Island, Japan. A devoted follower of Christ, Luke’s life was a testament to the values of faith, love, and compassion.

Born on April 13, 1989, in Riverside, California to loving parents Gregg and Nora Unrath as one of three triplets. Luke remained in Riverside throughout childhood and attended Immanuel Lutheran Elementary School, Amelia Earhart Middle School, and Martin Luther King High school, as part of the graduating class of 2007. In his young life, Luke enjoyed playing sports, participating in Cub Scouts, playing the drums and taking family road trips during summer breaks from school. Luke graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Aerospace engineering from California Polytechnic University, Pomona in 2013.

Luke was a dedicated and loving husband, son, brother and friend. He was married on February 12, 2021, to the love of his life, Brooke Reinlie Unrath. Luke’s profound Christian faith, his humility, his perseverance in the face of adversity, and his ability to bring joy and laughter into our lives were his true legacies. Whether it was offering his home to a friend in need, praying for a stranger, or flying a flag in honor of a fallen comrade, Luke lived his faith through his actions. Luke’s ability to share the good news of salvation, to sense when someone needed encouragement or support, and to offer a prayer or a helping hand was a gift that he gave freely and often.

Luke’s journey in the Air Force, beginning with his commission through the Reserve Officer Training Corps at California State University San Bernardino and culminating in his role as a CV-22 Aircraft Commander and Flight Commander, was marked by his passion for flying and his commitment to excellence. His transition from an Astronautical Engineer to a pilot symbolized his resolute determination and his love for the skies. Serving in the 21st Special Operations Squadron, Luke’s leadership and skill were instrumental in numerous operations, earning him respect and admiration from his peers. During his service in the Air Force, Luke received the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Air and Space Commendation Medal, Air and Space Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Award, National Defense Service Medal and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Luke is survived by his wife Brooke Unrath, parents Gregg and Nora Unrath, brother Scott Unrath, and sisters Ashley Pasqualetti and Carly Ewing.

The funeral service celebrating Luke’s life and faith will be held in Riverside, California – details are forthcoming.

As we say goodbye for now, we take solace in knowing that Luke lived a life full of love, guided by his faith, and dedicated to serving others. He was a wonderful husband, a beloved family member, a loyal friend, and a true servant of God. The world is indeed a better place because of him.
